WHAT WE DID WHILE CHARGING:

First things first, we made a friend.

Upon first arrival we were greeted by a couple in the parking lot that was interested in how we liked our Tesla. They has just test driven one recently in Seattle. Since this is not only our first time ever driving an electric vehicle, but our first stop of the day we were able to share about our trip and this project (yes we have business cards with links to our sites on them) and our first impressions of this pretty sweet car.

Next up Whitney’s parents surprised us in the parking lot. They drove all the way from West Salem, Wisconsin to greet us with a friendly face and a bag full of goodies! (Thanks Ann and Kevin!) They even made sure we had our favorite road trip snacks.

While we waited for the car to charge we enjoyed lunch at the Ground Round Grill and visited with the Binas.

TIME START: 12:23 p.m.

TIME END: 1:20 pp.m.

LENGTH OF CHARGE: 57 minutes

MILES/WH: 280

HOW WE’RE FEELING: We just completed the second longest stretch we’ll see between chargers and we feel good. The first hour of the trip was a little rough as we figured out the car function details like how the navigation system works, where the cruise control functions are, and how to manage our energy use. At one point the car was even telling us we couldn’t drive over 65 miles an hour if we wanted to reach our destination. As we went along our confidence grew and the car did a great job of telling us where the battery was at and how many more miles we could go. (Watch our Facebook page later today for some video highlights.) We made it Worthington with 14% of our battery left and found the charger easily.

OTHER NOTES:

It’s such a beautiful day for a drive and we’re feeling re-energized after stopping for lunch. The car has been relatively easy to get used to. It certainly has some get up and go but the most difficult thing to get used to so far is how the car quickly slows down without actually pressing the break.

  1. I see you are getting used to the regenerative braking. When you switch back to an ICE ( internal combustion engine) car you’ll miss that.

    1. Hi John! Since we are driving a Tesla S, charging at any Tesla Supercharging locations is built into the cost of the vehicle, so we do not have to pay for charging on this trip. There are several options for charging which we will be posting about throughout the day and later this week. There are subscription models for charging, “pay at the pump” type charging and home charging options.
